In 2027, the Landscape Research Group will celebrate sixty years of supporting international, interdisciplinary research and exchange around landscape.
Our anniversary programme will bring together members, researchers, networks and partners through a year of online and in-person activity. It builds upon LRG’s existing events, publications, Research Fund and international networks, while creating new opportunities to reflect on the organisation’s history and consider the future of landscape research.
Anniversary highlights
Friday 19 March: Asia-Pacific Celebration
Hosted by LRG’s China and Australasia-Pacific networks, this online regional celebration will bring together members and researchers from across this region.
Monday 3 May: LRG’s 60th Anniversary Day
We will mark this official anniversary day across LRG’s digital channels, sharing material that reflects on the organisation’s first sixty years and the people, ideas and relationships that have shaped its work. Members will be invited to join the celebration through this shared content.
Friday 7 May: Shared EMEA Celebration
Networks and members from Europe, Africa and the Middle East will come together for a collective online event featuring anniversary reflections, current research and future directions for landscape research.
September: Anniversary Symposium, AGM and Critical Field Study
Our principal in-person anniversary programme is expected to take place in Manchester alongside the 2027 Planning Research Conference. It will include the LRG Annual General Meeting and a 60th Anniversary Symposium.
We also hope to follow the Manchester programme with a Critical Field Study in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales, exploring landscape change, heritage, environmental regeneration and community resilience.
Dates will be confirmed once the Planning Research Conference programme has been announced.
Friday 15 October: Americas Celebration
Our North and Latin American networks will host an online regional celebration, sharing research and collaboration from across the Americas as well as highlights from the UK anniversary programme.
Late 2027: Routledge Companion launch
Subject to the publication timetable, we hope to mark the latest edition of the Routledge Companion to Landscape Studies with an anniversary launch involving its international contributors.
Activity throughout the year
The anniversary will also be reflected across LRG’s established programme, including:
- Landscape Researchers’ Coffee Hours and regional network events;
- Landscape Law Network Coffee Hours;
- the 2027 Research Fund and Research Showcases;
- a monthly anniversary editorial series;
- new historical and archival material;
- promotion of relevant conferences and partner events; and
- the launch and continuing development of the new integrated LRG and LEX website.
