Landscape Research Group (LRG) are delighted to announce our collaboration with University of the Highlands and Islands, the National Library of Scotland on Mapping Identities: Visual Depictions of Scotland.
This project will bring together key scholars from a wide range of disciplines to explore the ways in which maps have been, and are still, used to interpret and shape Scottish understanding of the present, past and future. The project investigates the ways in which attitudes to local and national identities shaped and were shaped by cartographical depictions of Scotland, how maps have reflected and influenced perceptions of Scotland’s place in geography and cosmology, and the relationship between mapping, power, and authority.
The project is now seeking expressions of interest from LRG members wishing to take part in one or more of three workshops which will be held across Scotland in 2025. The format of the workshops will allow each researcher to showcase their own work, after which roundtable discussions will encourage new and lasting collaborative links.
Scholars in fields such as landscape studies, history, politics, cartography, linguistics, geography, ethnography, geology and the visual arts are encouraged to apply.
The Call for Interest is available here. This includes the workshop themes, locations, contact information and details of how you can get involved in this exciting exploration of Scotland’s cartographical heritage.
