Call for Abstracts for the 12th Workshop of the German Landscape Research Network
The Arbeitskreis Landschaftsforschung, German Landscape Research Working Group, is a thriving network supported by the Landscape Research Group. Since 2019, this initiative has connected landscape researchers and practitioners across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and beyond, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
We’re pleased to share that the network has just launched its 12th annual workshop, inviting contributions on:
Suburban, Metropolitan Landscapes – Transformation, Conflict, Co-Production, Sustainability?

📍 Location: Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER), Dresden
Suburban and metropolitan landscapes are dynamic and often marked by diverse conflicts. This workshop aims to critically examine their complex and sometimes contradictory development while presenting and discussing current research approaches and findings. Through a transdisciplinary dialogue among scientists, planners, and other landscape actors, the workshop will identify key areas for further research. Discussions will be framed around three overarching themes:
- Development trends and qualities of suburban and metropolitan landscapes
- Planning, policy, and governance
- Narratives, practices, subjectivities and materialities.
The German Landscape Research Network serves as a platform for exchange between researchers from universities and scientific institutions and practitioners from administration, planning offices, civil society organisations, and other areas of landscape practice.
Early-career researchers and students are particularly encouraged to participate. As with all Arbeitskreis Landschaftsforschung workshops, contributions covering all aspects of landscape research – whether theoretical, methodological, empirical, or application-oriented – are welcome.
Submission deadline: 15 May 2025
Conference language: Primarily German, but English-speaking participants are welcome.
