About this Network

The Landscape Law Research Network brings together researchers and practitioners interested in the ways that law shapes landscapes and how landscape perspectives can inform legal thinking. The network provides a welcoming forum to explore contemporary landscape challenges through legal research while building an international community within the Landscape Research Group and beyond.

Landscape is a central concern across disciplines including geography, planning, ecology, architecture, archaeology and the arts. Yet the role of law in shaping, governing and protecting landscapes has often received less attention within landscape research.

The Landscape Law Research Network provides a space to examine the relationship between landscape and law, explore how legal perspectives can deepen our understanding of contemporary landscape challenges, and strengthen collaboration between legal scholars and researchers from across the wider landscape research community.

Founding members of the network currently represent Ireland, the UK, South Africa, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Canada. They are full professors, early career researchers, PhD candidates and legal practitioners. They are also members of the International Law Association, European Society of International Law, Association of Critical Heritage Studies, Socio-Legal Studies Association, Landscape Forum Ireland, Environmental Justice Network Ireland, and the Critical Legal Pedagogies of Race and Empire Network.

The network explores legal frameworks for landscape protection alongside broader questions of spatial justice, governance and rights. It welcomes interdisciplinary dialogue and encourages collaboration between academics, practitioners and policymakers working across different legal systems and geographical contexts.
