The Landscape Research Group (LRG) is an international, independent charity that exists to advance landscape research for the public benefit. Through our journal, research funding, events, regional networks and growing international community, we support researchers, practitioners and organisations working to understand and improve landscapes around the world.
Our annual recruitment is currently open for new trustees to join our Board and help shape the next chapter of LRG’s development.
Whether your interests lie in research, practice, education, policy, governance or community building, becoming a trustee is an opportunity to contribute your skills to an organisation with an international reach and a clear social purpose.
Why now?
This is an exciting time to join LRG. We are expanding our international networks, developing a new digital platform and member experience, growing our research funding programme, and continuing to strengthen Landscape Research as a leading international journal. We hope interested members will take the opportunity to participate more deeply in shaping the organisation’s future by standing for election.
Why become a trustee?
Our trustees play a vital role in ensuring that LRG remains a strong, ambitious and well-governed charity. Together, the Board sets the organisation’s strategic direction, oversees its finances and governance, and helps ensure that our activities continue to support landscape research and those working within the field.
Beyond governance, trustees often choose to become involved in areas that match their own interests and expertise, helping to shape initiatives such as:
- research funding
- publications, including Landscape Research
- membership and community development
- regional networks
- conferences and events
- communications and digital engagement
- organisational development and partnerships
Being a trustee is also an excellent opportunity to:
- contribute to an internationally respected charity
- work alongside researchers and practitioners from around the world
- develop leadership and governance experience
- broaden your professional network
- help shape the future of landscape research
What is involved?
The Board normally meets five times each year, primarily online, with occasional hybrid or in-person meetings. Face-to-face meetings are usually held in the UK, although they may also take place elsewhere. Trustee roles generally cover three years, with the potential to re-stand.
Trustees are expected to prepare for meetings, contribute actively to discussions and, where appropriate, support projects or working groups between meetings. This includes serving on at least one of our standing committees.
The role is voluntary, although all reasonable expenses incurred while carrying out trustee duties are reimbursed.
Who can apply?
Any current member of LRG may stand for election as a trustee. If you are not yet a member, you are very welcome to join before submitting your nomination.
We welcome applications from people at every career stage, including students and early career researchers, alongside experienced academics, practitioners, artists, consultants and professionals working across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
Previous trustee experience is not essential. We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about LRG’s mission, willing to contribute their time and expertise, and able to work collaboratively as part of an international board. A good standard of written and spoken English is required.
Skills and experience
We are particularly interested in hearing from people with experience or an interest in one or more of the following areas:
Governance and organisational development
- Charity governance
- Finance and income generation
- Fundraising and partnerships
- Strategy and organisational development
Research and knowledge exchange
- Academic publishing
- Research funding
- Landscape research and practice
- Communications and digital engagement
Community and member engagement
- Membership development
- Regional networks
- Conferences and events
- Community building
You do not need experience in every area. We are seeking a balanced Board with a broad range of perspectives, skills and lived experiences.
Diversity and representation
LRG is committed to building a diverse, inclusive and internationally representative Board of Trustees. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, career stages, disciplines and geographical regions.
To meet our governance and banking requirements, at least two elected trustees must have full residential status in the United Kingdom.
